In the boxing main event, Light Heavyweight Alfonso Lopez of Cut And Shoot, Texas was simply brilliant. He scored a unanimous ten-round decision over a game but out-gunned Ronald Weaver of New Orleans.
The 35-year old Weaver, who was fighting for the first time since 2005, showed tremendous courage against the younger, bigger, faster and busier Lopez but youth was served. Weaver, who was trained by former New Orleans welterweight great Percy Pugh.
Lopez displayed very fast hands, has excellent reach, superb balance and looked as though he could have easily gone 15 rounds. He hit Weaver with many combinations throughout.
The sixth-round featured a tremendous exchange and was easily the best round of the fight. Weaver was nearly out on his feet but came back to rally with many big shots later in the round. From that point on, Lopez reasserted his dominance to control the fight.
This was a case of the Tiger being too powerful for the Cobra, Lopez, otherwise known as "El Tigre," is trained by Henry Harris, who once fought Floyd Patterson for the world light heavyweight championship. Alfonso Lopez brought an unblemished record into his light heavyweight match against Ronald Weaver, but he still was searching for a victory that would finally put him on the map.
Mission accomplished.
Lopez took control of the fight and repeatedly punished Weaver, a former International Boxing Association welterweight and middleweight champion, with a whirlwind of jabs and right hands en route to a commanding 10-round unanimous decision Friday night in the main event of "Brawlin' in N'awlins, " a boxing and mixed martial arts card at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.
"I think this was my biggest (win), " said Lopez (14-0 with 11 knockouts). "I could have maybe done better, but I felt pretty good."
Lopez spent the first two rounds feeling out Weaver, (27-18-2, 17 knockouts). The Texas fighter opened up his arsenal in the third and took control of the bout from that point, at times unleashing a series of combinations and right hands to Weaver's head and body.
Lopez mixed his offense with elusive defense. He floated around the ring like an apparition, making Weaver miss on many punches.
Weaver galvanized the crowd with a strong right hand at the end of the fifth and another to close the eighth, but each time Lopez responded with a smile.
"He (Weaver) snuck in a few good shots, but nothing that really shook me, " Lopez said. "He was missing a lot and trying to hit me with the edge of his gloves. He didn't really rough me up."
Weaver, of New Orleans, returned to the ring after a three-and-a-half year hiatus. He had recently hired a strength-and-conditioning coach to prepare for the fight.
Weaver took Lopez's hardest shots and pushed forward, but in the end it wasn't enough.
